All the branch campus of Shandong Experimental High School (SEHS) held a series of activities named “5.25 Mental Health Week” from May twentieth to May twenty-sixth, which regarded “Enjoy Myself and Inspire Life; Accompany Youth with Happiness” as the theme. The purpose of holding these kinds of activities was to further promote mental health education work, propaganda mental health knowledge and promote the overall healthy development of students.

During the activity, the school introduced mental health knowledge to students through different forms such as flag-raising ceremony, class meeting, live mental games, excellent mental movies appreciation and mental health knowledge exhibition, so that students could understand themselves, get acquainted with others and feel the power of the collective.

The class meeting with the theme of “passing warmth” let students express their concerns to teachers and classmates by writing their own words on the encouragement card, thanks card, apology card, praise card and care card, which allowed students to not only love themselves but also feel the warmth from people around them. “I was touched by the words from my teachers and classmates a lot. Thanks for remembering everything in my life and seeing all my happiness and sorrows. Thank you for guarding me silently for all the time.” There was a happy smile on every young face when students were sharing these warm words with each other. “I was greatly touched as a teacher in this class meeting and glad for the growth of my students, since they’d learned to love themselves and care about others.” Xiuting Lv, the head teacher of class six senior two, said after the end of class meeting.

“Sit down and Stand up”, “Heart Knots”, “Work together” and other classical collective mental quality games allowed students to realize the importance of cooperation, negotiation and willpower. “It was difficult to perform well in these interesting games, so we had to pull together and divide tasks into different parts.” “We always failed in the first time when we were playing. After that, we talked about the possible solutions together, and soon we found the way and completed all the tasks successfully. After finishing, we also enhanced the difficulty in order to challenge ourselves and make the games much more interesting.” “The power of the collective was huge, and the failure aroused our fighting spirit. I felt that we are more united after these challenges, and the distance between students was also narrowed.” Students who immersed in the joy of success expressed their harvest in this activity. Also, many head teachers attended these games. “This kind of activity which was very meaningful helped many classes to strengthen their ability to cooperate and create, allowing some introverted students to incorporate into new collectives well, since all the senior one students were divided into new classes after choosing courses.” Xiumei Cheng, the head teacher of class four senior one, said.

“5.25” shares the similar pronunciation with “I love myself”, which has a meaning of taking care of mental growth and health. SEHS has paid much attention to the education of mental health for many years and held the activity of mental health for ten years in a role, which has already become the most popular activity among teachers and student.   Translator: Delia Du
